Street-Smart Petunias

We walked the sidewalks of Perrysburg and noticed a curious thing. Above us hung robust planters spilling petunias in a glorious cascade of rich, jewel tones over the side. Healthy green leaves accented the vibrant fuchsia blooms. Directly below, a plant bloomed in the cement crack of the sidewalk; leggy, weak-stemmed, a mere shadow of what grew above. How did that little petunia end up a street plant? Does someone water it on purpose or does it just suck in the drippings from above? Will it survive all summer? I was more fascinated with the homely plant at my feet struggling for survival than the glorious richness of life on the easy street of petunias living in a well-tended planter. I admired the gutsy, street wise plant that bloomed in spite of cigarette butts, hard dirt, hot concrete, and people hurrying by looking up.

Later that evening, we waited at a stop light while a group of dreadlocked, young people sat cross-legged on the sidewalk strumming guitars, drumming a rhythmic cadence with fingertips and palms, rolling cigarettes, nodding in time, and waving with smiles as I snapped photographs.

Suddenly I was reminded of the petunia growing in the crack of the sidewalk. I was more fascinated by the colorful gathering than properly-dressed city strollers heading for dinner downtown. Where did they come from? How did they get here...in the middle of Toledo, Ohio? What are their dreams? So many questions.

There's no moral to this little story, just a parallel between a street-smart petunia and a cluster of kids, savvy, expressive, and elegant in their own ways.

Inspiration within the Museum Place Community Garden

“Vegetables grow in vegetable gardens.  And people grow in community gardens.”
~Author Unknown

Whether it’s a garden that covers acres on a vast country estate or a community garden smack dab in the middle of a city, gardens are magical. Last Friday evening, while spending a few days with my friend, MJ, we hit the Toledo Museum of Art for the It’s Friday event.

We took the long way back to the car down a sidewalk next to a twig fence in miniature keeping pretty marigolds all in a row.

Yes, I discovered enchantment within the Museum Place, a community garden in the Old West End neighborhood.

A flagstone walk invited us to enter a bouquet of gardens. . .
Here a polka dot marker designated the plot number...

and over there a marker stood colorful in a stand of pink achillea.

There were vegetables and herbs growing with jubilant abandon as cars streamed by.

A small bed of stones kept green and purple basils in place.
I smiled at sunflowers; the joyfully open and shy buds...

I found elegance...

Beauty...

Reminders...

                                                                    Whimsey

But most of all I found H O P E..
The Toledo Botanical Garden sponsors Toledo Grows and within the program eight community gardens throughout the city offer residents the opportunity to grow their own vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Please take some time to wander over to their website and if you’re in Toledo, visit one of the gardens. You’ll leave smiling and inspired...I sure did!

Realization

I just realized today is Wednesday and I posted for Mosaic Monday on Tuesday.  Holiday Mondays really confuse me.  I keep forgetting that tomorrow is Thursday and I'm off for a few days, the country mouse visiting the city friend.

I hope the weather takes a cooler turn, so we can wander the streets and visit sites I know, but miss.  Losing myself in the beauty of art renews my spirit and inspires, so maybe we'll find time to visit the Toledo Art Museum.  I can never say no to the Toledo Botanical Garden.  Perhaps we'll search for a new bistro or coffee shop for talking while creamy latte or plain ole java cools in our mugs. I'm always up for heading downtown to search for photo ops and city energy.

I may mention heading to Perrysburg and The Ribbonry, a wonderful place with sumptuous ribbons from France.  Or...we could just talk on MJ's deck, catching up, and sharing secrets before walking about her yard with camera in hand ready to snap a photo of a flower, a bird, a butterfly, or her new companion, Ayla.

Yes, I need this snippet of a getaway for peace of mind.  The well needs water and I'm going to dance in the rain for a few days.

Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

Visit a Garden in Northwest Ohio

red rose and buds photo by Teresa Opdycke
Gathering ideas, appreciating the beauty others create provides inspiration for our own gardens. With an economy squeezing so many of us, there’s little left over to take one or two week vacations to faraway places. If, like me, you’re one of those people who love to explore new places, but can’t afford to travel far, check out what’s in our backyard. Here’s a short list of gardens and a nursery to visit and the best part is…every one is in northwest Ohio.
